Non-Medical Cannabis Retail Licence Applications

As at October 10, 2018, the Province had received payment for 173 non-medical cannabis retail licence applications.  Of the applications submitted and paid for, only 62 had been referred to local municipalities or Indigenous First Nations.  The other 111 applications were deemed to be incomplete.

With legalization now upon us, it is increasingly important for those seeking non-medical cannabis retail licences to submit their complete application.  Not only is there much uncertainty and potential risk surrounding operating without a licence post-legalization, there have also been certain municipalities who have adopted very limited licence caps or “first come, first serve” policies.

Application Process

In order to submit a non-medical cannabis retail licence application, there are various documents that must be compiled and completed.  The Province has also set out a number of requirements that must be adhered to when preparing the application for submission.  Such requirements range from specified lists of supporting documents to particular document formats (i.e. PDF, jpeg).

It is clear that the Province is undertaking a thorough review of the application materials submitted.  Any missed documents or deviations from the Province’s requirements are subject to delay in the application process.

How We Can Help

At Magellan, our team has extensive experience assisting those wishing to prepare for and submit non-medical cannabis retail licence applications.  We can provide support to applicants at all stages of the licensing process, including information gathering and research, assistance with preparation of application documents and review of final application materials for submission.  Our experience includes preparing applications which have moved onto the municipal referral stage.

We recognize that preparing a complete application can be a daunting task and the requirements will vary for each applicant.  We welcome the opportunity to discuss your specific circumstances and to use our expertise and knowledge to guide you through the licensing process.
